Lot Essay

These antiquarian ebonised chairs are embattled and flowered in the Romantic Gothic fashion, and are heraldically charged with the crest of a 'martlet on a ducal coronet', which is likely to be that of George Temple, 3rd Earl Temple and 1st Marquess of Buckingham (d. 1813). Their Tudor style corresponds with that of the Marquess' library at Stowe, Buckinghamshire designed in 1805 by the architect Sir John Soane (d. 1837) (C. Wilk, Western Furniture in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1996, p. 140). They were designed en suite with a sofa table sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 12 November 1998, lot 457. The style of these furnishings was popularised by G. Smith in Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808 (see pls. 36, 54, 57 and 85).
