THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
With arched rectangular plate in a profusely carved C-scroll rockwork and foliage frame surmounted by a rockwork cresting and two putti on a ladder gathering grapes, the columns framing the central plate wreathed with vines, the lower corners with a lamb and two hounds, the apron centred by a dog, losses and replacements, the reverse inscribed in chalk 'BC'

The overmantel mirror is conceived in the French 'picturesque' manner and its composition, with bacchic theme of grape-harvesting youths, mostly derives from an engraving by Thomas Johnson issued in a collection of designs dedicated to Lord Blakeney in 1758 (pl. 21) and reissued in Johnson's One Hundred and Fifty New Designs, 1761 (pl. 21). The latter was reprinted as 'Chippendale' during William IV's reign and published as Chippendale's One Hundred and Thirty Three Designs, 1834.
