With rectangular top with solid three-quarter gallery, above three further tiers between column supports, the lowest tier enclosing a cedar-lined drawer, on turned tapering feet with brass caps and castors, the drawer and underside with Royal brand 'VR', below a crown, the underside of one tier with depository label printed 'H & M Ponsonby(?)', the underside inscribed in chalk 'RG', the underside inscribed 'FLEUR...'

This mobile multi-trayed bookstand, popularly known since the 1790s as a 'whatnot', is likely to have been provided for a government office in the early 19th century, and its crown-ensigned VR (Victoria Regina) inventory brand probably dates from the 1860s.
