A croft, or small writing-cabinet, is named after its inventor, The Reverend Sir Herbert Croft, Bt. (1751-1816) (see Sir Ambrose Heal, 'The Croft', Country Life, January 17, 1947). A related croft was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 9 July 1992, lot 58 (£3,740), although the latter was fitted with two side flaps and a frieze drawer.
