The rounded rectangular later white marble top above three glazed doors with stencilled floral decoration, enclosing two crimson velvet-lined shelves with gilt-stamped green-leather dust-flaps, on a plinth base, the hinges stamped with an arrow through a circle, previously with a superstructure, the back edge of the marble top incised 'J17'

The commode's stencilled floral ornament, in the medieval manner, reflects the influence of Augustus Welby Pugin's Floriated Ornament, London, 1849, which aimed to revive the Gothic fashion for pressed plants arranged in abstract rather than naturalistic ways.
