LATE 18TH CENTURY
Each with a solid tapering panelled back painted with a crest and motto of a dragon's head above a fleur-de-lys, the solid seat with circular panel, on square tapering legs, one back leg with restored break (2)

Possibly Sir Denzil Cope, 10th Bt. (1766-1812) or his brother, Sir John Cope, 11th Bt. (1768-1851).

Lot Essay

The crest is that of the Cope family of Hanwell, Oxfordshire and Bramshill, Hampshire. The motto translates 'Be ready with contancy'.
