George Vincent exhibited his first pictures with the Norwich Society of Artists in 1811, receiving tuition from John Crome.
The present work is a view of Lowestoft lighthouse, built to guide small ships in to port along the Stanford Channel, now no longer extant. The low-light was constructed out of wood in 1779, but by 1874 the traditional system of oil-lamp burners was replaced with paraffin lights, new optics and a revolving lens.

We are grateful to Dr Peter Kennedy-Scott for his help with the cataloguing of this picture.
