Lot Essay

The terrace of Somerset House can be seen on the left of the picture, with a water gate and steps descending to the river. St. Paul's dome can be seen in the distance, as well as various spires of the city churches, Monument tower and Old London Bridge. This view was probably painted by Canaletto in 1750-51 and was repeated with slight variations on several occasions by Canaletto.
