This striking court or buffet cabinet shows strong Netherlandish influence and is a prime example of late Renaissance marquetry-decorated furniture from Cologne, an area with a long tradition in cabinet making. Closely related cabinets survive in the Museum für Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt, and The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (M. Bauer et al., Europäische Möbel von der Gotik bis zum Jugendstil, cat. 28 and R. Baarsen, German furniture, Amsterdam, 1998, cat. 2).
