Lot Essay

The reliefs being offered here are highly accurate reductions of three of the Raphael Cartoons currently hanging in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. The original cartoons were hanging in Hampton Court Palace from as early as 1697 but were eventually moved to the museum in 1867. With a dating of 1820-1, the plaster reliefs were therefore conceived while the originals were still in the royal residence.
