Jan Sluijters sojourned in Staphorst, a small rural village, from 1915 until 1916. He and his wife lived there in solitude in a small cottage. He was fascinated by living in the country and experimented with a new style of painting. Following the fashion of that time, his colours became darker and greener, his brushstrokes grew broader and heavier. The paintings from this period, the so called Staphorst period, are generally considered to be among his most expressionistic works.

To be included in the catalogue raisonné on the artist's work, currently being prepared by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) in The Hague.
