Lot Essay

During 1906 and 1907 Sluijters painted the outskirts of Amsterdam on several occasions. Just like George Breitner he was fascinated with the urbanization of the city. Sluijters was very charmed by places where old and new developments met. Mills such as the 'Houtzaagmolen' were the subject of several of his paintings, always placed in an atmospheric light, painted with a sketchy impressionist brushstroke.
To be included in the catalogue raisonné on the artist's work, currently being prepared by the Netherlands Institute for Art History (RKD) in The Hague.
