Lot Essay

Towards the end of 1942 Charley Toorop's home village Bergen has to be evacuated. Toorop makes use of the situation and has her house 'De Vlerken' renovated while she moves to Amsterdam and later to Blaricum where she stays with Bart van der Leck and his family. In May 1944 Toorop returns to Bergen, where she works on 'Drie Generaties', until she suddenly has to leave again. Bergen is evacuated once again and Charley moves to Edam. The present lot must have been painted between May and August 1944, in the few months that Charley happily worked in her beloved studio in Bergen.
