A Chinese album, late 18th/early 19th century
containing eight double leaves and further three inscribed leaves, painted in ink and colour on silk and paper, inscribed and illustrated with scenes from romantic stories of famous men and women in Chinese history. One scene depicts Cai Wenji of the Han Dynasty, sent as a bride to pacify the barbarians. Another depicts Liu Yi and the Princess of Lake Dongting, the daughter of the Dragon Lord of the Waters -- each leaf 13in. x 9¾in. (33cms x 24.7cms).
