The magnificent brilliant-cut D colour, internally flawless diamond weighing 55.92 carats is the largest of its kind ever to appear for sale at auction. Previously, the largest brilliant-cut diamond of this quality was a 44.18 carat gem sold by Christie's New York in April 1996 for $5,667,500 or $128,000 per carat.
To add to the credentials of lot 598, the proportions and symmetry are both described as excellent on the diamond grading report from the Gemological Institute of America and it is of the chemically pure type IIa material, as indicated by the Gübelin Gem Lab.
