Original buff printed wrappers, the lower panel listing 5 items published by Barth dated 1911 to 1919 and with publisher's imprint 'Metzger & Wittig, Leipzig' at foot (extremities of wrappers chipped and with small tears causing loss). Provenance: Walter Theile, Marburg, Lahn (b.1905, author of Katalog und statistische Bearbeitung von 281 delta Cepheisternen (Berlin: 1939), inscription on title dated Christmas 1928 and inkstamp on title) -- manuscript note on p.64 recording that Einstein celebrated his 50th birthday in Berlin on 14 March 1929 -- occasional markings -- Dr Arthur Beer (1900-1980, see footnote to lot 79, and by descent).

Die Grundlage ... was first published in Annalen der Physik, series 4, no. 49, and was issued as an offprint in the present form with the addition of a table of contents on pp.3-5 and Einstein's 'Einleitung' on pp.5-6.
