JANE BAILLIE WELSH'S BIBLE AT THE AGE OF THIRTEEN. Born in Haddington, East Lothian, the daughter of a doctor, Jane Baillie Welsh 'showed considerable powers both of intellect and of character while still at school.' In 1821 she was introduced to Thomas Carlyle who first took on the role of German tutor and then lover; they were married in 1826. Although her selfless devotion as a wife was put through considerable trials, Jane is remembered for the slightly malicious wit that helped make her 'one of the best letter writers in the English language.' Her circle of correspondents included Mazzini, Tennyson, R. Browning, J. Forster, and Geraldine Jewsbury, though some of her best letters were sent to relatives in Edinburgh and Liverpool, and to her husband. Herbert 1504.
