PARKMAN, Francis (1788-1852) -- BIBLE, in English: The Holy Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments together with the Apocrypha. New York: Collins, 1814. 4° (274 x 220mm). With 9 engravings and 2 maps. (Lacking one map, some spotting and staining, a little browning.) Contemporary red morocco, gilt panelled spine compartments (rebacked), red morocco slip-case. Provenance: Francis and Sarah Parkman (inscribed on front fly-leaf 'Francis and Sarah Parkman from their Mother Sarah Parkman, January 1818', with a later inscription on the same leaf giving details of the marriages of these two children) -- Halsted B. Vander Poel. The Parkman's were a Boston merchant family. Francis (Reverend), the author of The Offering of Sympathy, was the pastor of New North church, Boston 1813-1849. A graduate of Harvard, he founded there the professorship of pulpit eloquence and pastoral care in 1829 and later in 1834 was conferred with the honorary degree D.D. His son was the noted historian Francis Pakman (1823-1893).
THIRD EDITION OF THE QUARTO BIBLE, ASSOCIATION COPY. Reprint of the 1791 edition (Trenton, New Jersey: Isaac Collins, 1791), with the same error in 1 Tim.iv.16 thy doctrine for the doctrine. Two stubs are present at end of Apocrypha, but the text is apparently complete. The present copy is possibly a combination of two editions, EBA 256 and 270. Not in Historical Catalogue of Printed Bibles.
