PLUTARCH (c.46-c.120). The Philosophie, commonlie called, the Morals ... Translated out of Greeke into English ... by Philemon Holland, London: Arnold Hatfield, 1603. 2° (329 x 216mm). Historiated woodcut headpiece on title, numerous woodcut initials and typographical headpieces, with the final errata leaf. (Title a little dust-soiled, edges of first 3 and last 2 leaves very slightly corroded.) Contemporary English calf, gilt arabesque at centre of sides (slightly rubbed, short splits in hinges), in a leather-backed cloth folding box, red morocco label on spine (slightly rubbed). Provenance: Holbrook Jackson (signature, dated 1927, on endpaper). FIRST COMPLETE ENGLISH EDITION translated by the prolific Philemon Holland (1552-1637) who also translated Livy, Pliny the Elder, Suetonius, Ammianus Marcellinus and Xenophon's Cyropaedia, and also Camden's Britannia.
