Buried Alive, a romantic fantasy set in London and involving mistaken identities, wills and a court case, was written during Bennett's highly productive autumn and winter of 1907/08, when he also completed The Old Wives Tale, and another short novel. It concludes with the departure of its mysterious painter hero, Priam Farll, for a 'sweet exile' in Algiers with 'the enchantress Alice'. Published in 1908, it was later made into a play (The Great Adventure).
