KELMSCOTT PRESS -- [Jacobus de VORAIGNE (1230-1298)]. The Golden Legend, translated by William Caxton, edited F. S. Ellis, Hammersmith: Kelmscott Press, 1892. 3 volumes. Large 4° (290 x 205mm). Golden type, woodcut title and two full-page woodcuts after Edward Burne Jones, woodcut initials. (A few signatures lightly browned as usual, occasional very light mainly marginal spotting.) Original half-cloth with paper labels, unopened (corners rubbed, labels with small tears and detaching). ONE OF 500 COPIES. This collection of lives of the saints gave its name to the type used for it, the Golden Type, which was modelled on a combination of the types used by Jacobus Rebus and Nicholas Jenson in 1476. The Kelmscott edition was set up from a transcript of Caxton's first edition of his translation (Westminster: 1483). Sparling 7; Tomkinson p. 109. (3)
