MAURITIUS. Manuscript military order book, general orders issued at Head Quarters in Port Louis, Saint Denis, Pamplemousse and Mon Plaisir, 16 May 1812 - 3 August 1814, the orders issued by E. Lindsay, Deputy Adjutant General, 254 pages, 4to and folio (some old dampstaining and browning, without loss of legibility), in a folio volume, paper backed boards. Provenance: Mark Dineley (bookplate).
The general orders concern the mundane daily matters of pay, promotion, rations, discipline and the medical establishment on the islands of Mauritius and Bourbon (Réunion), with occasional interruptions to military routine, such as celebrations of Allied victories in the Napoleonic Wars, or a fire in the town of Port Louis. The penultimate order in the volume celebrates confirmation of the abdication of Napoleon. The period covered is the earliest stage of British occupation, from two years after their conquest of the island in 1810; the island was officially ceded to Britain under the Treaty of Paris in 1814.
