Three autograph letters signed (one with signature excised) to: Miss Lovell, Keswick, 10 May 1816, 2 pages, 4to (worn, split at folds, fragment of integral address leaf); to 'My dear friend' [?Miss Metzener], Keswick, 30 July 1826, 2 pages, 4to (slightly browned); and to John May, Keswick, 18 February 1832, 4 pages, 4to, integral address panel (signature excised, seal tear). The letter to Miss Lovell grieves for 'the loss of our only son, & that son one of the most hopeful in every respect that ever parents were blest with', refers to a poetic work by a friend of the recipient, and gives family news. The letter to an unidentified friend gives gloomy household news. The long letter to John May discusses a variety of news, including the approaching publication of 'my prose selections', and referring to a dispute with John Murray over the publication of Byron's works; discussing public affairs, Southey fears 'that the time is hastening on when public concerns will affect the vital interests of every individual. Wordsworth is made positively unhappy by this thought'; giving news also of an unexpected legacy, and promising to send an autograph of Wordsworth.
