Il presente dipinto è stato reso noto da Stefania Macioce con una "possibile attribuzione a Carlo Maratta o alla sua cerchia" per le sue affinità compositive con tre disegni del maestro marchigiano (cf. S. Macioce, op. cit., 1993, pp. 448-452, figg. 250-251, 254).
Il Dottor Giancarlo Sestieri, che ringraziamo, ha avanzato un'attribuzione a Giuseppe Ghezzi dopo aver visionato il dipinto. Siamo anche grati alla Dottoressa Anna Lo Bianco, che dopo aver studiato l'opera in originale ha suggerito l'ipotesi attributiva in favore di Giacinto Brandi.
