Secondo la cronaca tardo medievale di Roger of Wendover, Lady Godiva cavalcò nuda per le strade di Coventry, in Inghilterra, accogliendo la sfida di suo marito Leofric, il governatore della contea, a patto che questi abolisse le onerose tasse che gravavano sulla popolazione. L'eroina è raffigurata mentre si appresta alla sfida, coperta unicamente dai suoi lunghi capelli. La leggenda di Lady Godiva divenne molto popolare in epoca romantica ad opera del poeta Alfred Lord Tennyson, diffondendosi così dall'Inghilterra all'Europa continentale.
