These chess sets were originally carved in the region of Brienz in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland, from the 18th century and subsequently sold as tourist pieces in 19th century.
COMPARATIVE LITERATURE: Victor Keats, 'The Illustrated Guide to World Chess Sets', Batsford 1985. A similar chess set is illustrated on page 108 and illustrated in plate 131.
