CROZAT, Joseph Antoine, Marquis de Tugny. Recueil d'Estampes d'après les plus beaux tableaux... qui sont en France. Paris: Imprimerie Royale, 1729-1742.
2 volumes, 2° (643 x 475mm). 147 engraved plates only, by Lamessin, du Flos, Simonneau, Larcher, le Sueur, and others, some double page, some printed in sepia, red or green, engraved headpieces. (Occasional light spotting or browning to plates, two neat marginal tears not affecting plates.) Contemporary mottled calf gilt, spine tooled in nine compartments (scuffing to boards, corners bumped, upper joint split, light wear to spine). Provenance: John Clevland (c. 1707-1763; printed booklabel) -- by descent to the present owners.
FIRST EDITION of this 'Beau recueil d'estampes' (Cohen-De Ricci). John Clevland was MP for Saltash and Sandwich, and also pursued a naval career; he was appointed joint Secretary of the Admiralty in 1746, assisting Thomas Corbett, and became sole Secretary on the latter's death. Brunet IV, p. 1157, calling for 182 plates; Cohen-De Ricci, 267, calling for 178 plates. (2)
