The work commemorates the fortnight of festivities celebrating the birth of Philip, heir to Charles IV, King of the Two Sicilies. The celebrations which included fireworks, masked balls and opera, began on Saturday 4 November 1747, four months after the prince's birth on 13 June. Among the musical events there were several performances of Hasse's opera 'Siroe' and Di Majo's 'Sogno di Olimpia', the cast including the greatest singers of the age. The Teatro San Carlo, Palazzo Reale and Castello Nuovo were transformed for this celebration into concert halls or ballrooms. As master of ceremonies, Vincenzo dal Ré recorded these transformations in his designs: 5 plates show the Royal Palace decorated for balls and musical entertainments, 5 plates depict the operas staged in Teatro San Carlo, 4 plates represent the fireworks machines, and one shows the Cuccagna. The festivities concluded on Sunday 19 November with a grand gala, the Cuccagna and fireworks at the Castello Nuovo. Berlin Kat. 3078; Lipperheide Si48; Vinet 604.
