MENGER, Carl (1840-1921). Untersuchungen über die Methode der Socialwissenschaften, und der Politischen Oekonomie inbesondere. Leipzig: Duncker & Humblot, 1883. [Bound with:] MENGER, C. Die Irrthümer des Historismus in der Deutschen Nationalökonomie. Vienna: Alfred Hölder, 1884.
2 works in one volume, 8° (209 x 135mm). The first work with half-title. (Light creasemarks at upper corners, light browning of page edges, without half-title to the second work.) Contemporary mottled boards, marbled edges (rebacked and recornered in black morocco, new endpapers). Provenance: 'O.G.' (ownership stamp on both titles).
FIRST EDITIONS OF BOTH WORKS, which mark the beginning of the famous debate between the Austrian and German school of economics. Menger's Untersuchungen, a polemic against the "Historical method" of the German school, and a brilliant defence of his own economic theory, precipitated a furore among German economists who responded with derisive attacks on Menger and the "Austrian school". Menger then replied with a shorter work on the Irrthümer or "Errors" of German economics.
