Collation: A10(3+1) B-G10 H8 I10 K-N6.8 O12 a-e10 f-i8.10 k-l6 m-o8 p6 q-s10 t12 u-y10 z6 &10 (A1 blank, &8 colophon, &8v,9 poem by the editor, &10 blank). 344 leaves (of 345, without final blank); N3.6 and N4.5 misbound before N1; quires I, K2.5, 3.4 i-m3.6 are in quarto. 44 lines. Type: 3:96R, some Greek. Large opening initial in red and blue with floral infill in red penwork on green ground, 2-to-7 line initials alternating in red or blue, capital strokes in red. Early 19th-century mottled calf over pasteboards, gilt borders on sides, gilt spine, red and black leather spine labels, blue pastepaper endpapers, blue edges (joints split, some wear at extremities). Provenance: some early marginalia (washed) -- ?Gaud 1842 (inscription) --Mr S. P. Avery, given to: -- The Grolier Club, NY (booklabel, sold 15 November 1968).
The Orthographia is a monumental dictionary of Latin words of Greek origin arranged in alphabetical order. It contains for each entry the Greek and Latin pronunciation, the different meanings, the earliest known appearance in Latin literature and some historical notes. Tortellius compiled this encyclopedic work using the Vatican Library in its earliest incarnation while serving as its first librarian. The printer, Hermannus Liechtenstein, is known to have printed four books in Treviso, from 1476 to 1477, but most of his works were produced in Vicenza. In some copies his name is substituted by that of 'Michael Manzolus'; in the present copy the colophon reads: 'Hermanus Levilapis Coloniensis'. HC 15565; BMC VI, 887-891; Goff T-396.
