[BERTIUS, Petrus (1565-1629)]. Tabularum geographicarum contractarum libri septem. Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius, 1616.
Oblong 8° (126 x 207mm). Latin text, some Greek. Engraved frontispiece, 216 engraved maps only (of 220), one map used twice, appearing as n.1 and 220, engraved initials. (Lacking the following text leaves: last 7 pages of first quire [*2-8], pp.1-2, pp.27-50, pp.668-672, pp.737-740, some browning and occasional spotting, red stain at lower margin of end quires.) Contemporary vellum, manuscript title on spine, red edges, title on the lower edge (lightly rubbed). Provenance: index to the book on front blank in a 20th-century hand.
FIRST EDITION. Koeman, IIIA, p. 442: 'In 1616 a new engraved series of plates was made for the edition of Bertius's Tabulae Geographicae Contractae to be published by Jodocus Hondius Jr. The plates were used to illustrate some other books with maps, such as Paulus Merula's Cosmographia Generalis, printed in Leiden by Isaac Elsevier for Jodocus Hondius.'
