Lot Essay

Charles XIII, Duke of Södermanland was Regent of Sweden 1792-1796 during the minority of his nephew Charles IV Gustavus. After the abdication of the latter in 1809, he became King of Sweden as Charles XIII and King of Norway in 1814. He was the last Swedish King of the House of Holstein-Gottorp. His adopted son Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (see preceding lot) introduced the House of Bernadotte to the Swedish throne in 1818. For a similar miniature of the sitter by Sparrgren, see M. Olausson/J. Sjöholm, Nationalmuseum Stockholm. Svenska och övriga nordiska miniatyrer, Halmstad, 2001, II, pp. 77 and 88.
