Joseph Bonaparte, eldest brother of Emperor Napoléon, was a lawyer, diplomat and soldier before being appointed King by his brother. He married Julie Clary in 1794 and had issue. After the fall of his brother, he went to Bordentown, New Jersey where he lived for seventeen years. He died in Florence. During his reign in Spain he became known as Pepe Botella due to his penchant for alcohol.
