Lot Essay

Sir Theophilus John Metcalfe, eldest son of Thomas Metcalfe, director of the East India Company, was created a Baronet on 21 December 1802 and succeeded his father on 17 November 1813. He married Selina-Sofia, daughter of Thomas Russell, and niece of Sir Henry Russell, Bt., of Swallowfield Place, Berkshire in 1802. He died in Canton where he was President of the Select Committee.
Williamson and Engleheart (op. cit.) record that Mr. Theo. Metcalf (sic) sat to Engleheart in 1811 and that the eyes of Mr. Metcalf, Jun., Mrs Metcalf and Miss Metcalf were painted in 1798. Mrs Metcalf's eye was also painted in 1800.
