François Sebastien Charles Joseph de Croix, Count de Clerfayt, was born at the Castle of Bruille in Hainault. He entered the Austrian Army in 1753 and distinguished himself in the Seven Year's War receiving the Imperial Order of Maria-Theresa. In 1788 he went to war against Turkey and defeated the Turks at Mehadia and Calafat. He commanded the Austrian Army against the French armies of the Revolution and was appointed Field Marshal in 1795. In 1796, he received the Order of the Golden Fleece.
