General Sir John Doyle entered the Army in the 46th Foot Regiment in 1771. He saw service in the American War of Independence and distinguished himself at the battle of Brooklyn where he rescued the body of his commanding officer. His home became the meeting house of the British officers and he became great friends with Lord Rawdon, later Marquis of Hastings. In 1784 he was elected M. P. for Mullingar in the Irish House of Commons. In 1799 he went to Gibraltar and accompanied Sir Ralph Abercromby's expedition to Egypt where he commanded the brilliant expedition of the desert of 17th May when he took six hundred French prisoners with two hundred and fifty cavalry. In 1802 he was made private secretary to the Prince of Wales. He later resigned on his appointment as Lieutenant-Governor of Guernsey where he made much improvement to the island. He left Guernsey in 1815 and was made a K. B. in 1813 and promoted to General in 1819 and Governor of Charlemont in 1818.
