Circular in form, the two parts once hinged together, the cover adorned with a repoussé appliqué depicting Uthuze (Odysseus) and Penelope, the hero to the left wearing his pilos helmet, a short tunic and full beard, his left leg raised onto a rock, a staff in his lowered left hand, leaning on his right elbow, his index finger extended, his wife standing opposite crossing her right leg over her left, wearing a long skirt, her left hand raised to her face, the dog Argos between them, a bucranion and a mask of Juno Sospita above, the border a wreath composed of laurel, dotted lozenge, and dotted bands, stippling along the groundline, projecting loops at the lower edge for the now-missing swing-handle, the mirror with lathe-turned concentric rings on the reverse, a four-letter inscription incised at the outer ring, perforated along the border to join to the hinge and cover
