A ROMAN TWO-TONED MARBLE BACCHUS
CIRCA LATE 2ND CENTURY A.D.
The youthful god of wine standing on his right leg, his left leg originally bent, nude but for his panther skin tied at his right shoulder and draped under his left arm and down his back, his left arm originally raised, a cluster of grapes once held in his hand preserved against the left shoulder, the right arm originally lowered, his head turned slightly to his right, the eyes with thick lids, the pupils and inner canthi deeply drilled, the lips parted, wearing an elaborate coiffure, the individual strands of hair finely drilled, center parted and surmounted by a wreath of ivy leaves and grapes that cascades to his shoulders, the god's hair and grape cluster exploiting a thick natural blue-gray vein in the marble
