THE PRESENTATION SCORE OF BARBER'S VIRTUOSIC FESTIVAL TOCCATA
The Toccata Festiva was commissioned by Mary Curtis Bok Zimbalist for the opening recital of the new organ she had donated to the Curtis Institute of Music. It extravagantly fulfils the requirements of a celebratory display piece, a quality particularly marked in a famously virtuosic pedal solo for the organ. The premiere was conducted by Eugene Ormandy, with Paul Callaway as soloist.
Mary Curtis Bok Zimbalist founded the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in October 1924. Barber was a former student at the school.
