This unpublished work pre-dates by some years the composer's earliest acknowledged works -- the Trumpet Sonata and Five Piano Pieces of 1955-56. It was first performed by Davies himself immediately after completion, at the BBC Studios, Manchester, 17 May 1950 (Stewart R. Craggs. Peter Maxwell Davies. A Source Book (2002) p.55).
