AN APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED GROUP OF PIECES FOR PONCHIELLI'S OWN USE
An organ verset is 'a short piece ... that replaces a verse of a hymn, psalm, canticle or other liturgical item sung by the choir' (Grove). Ponchielli's versets, typically only 25 or so bars long, comprise, after a prefatory 'Piccola Fuga per Organo', one series of eleven 'Versetti in Sol Maggiore', a second series of nine 'Versetti in Re minore', and a supplementary group of six untitled versets.

The composition of the present 'versetti' was begun when he was still a student at the Milan Conservatory, but he must have made use of them in his first appointment, as a church organist in Cremona. The heavy finger-marking to the lower corners of the pages indicates that the manuscript remained in use for a long period, and the variations in the script suggest that the original manuscript was expanded over some years. The fact that these charming short pieces remain unpublished confirms the impression that they would have been composed for Ponchielli's own use.
