A PHOENICIAN GOLD AND YELLOW JASPER SCARAB
CIRCA LATE 6TH CENTURY B.C.
With a hollow kidney-shaped hoop, tapering at each end to a wire that threads through the scarab and coils back upon itself, with a V-shaped suspension loop, its edges reinforced by stout wire; the scarab well-detailed, the underside engraved with a king dispatching a lion, the king wearing a conical cap and a flounced open robe, wielding a fenestrated axe in his raised left hand, holding the lion upside down by a hind paw, the lion with its head turned back, on a crosshatched exergue, enclosed within a cable border
