The flat oval stone, late Roman Republic, circa mid 1st century B.C., engraved with facing portrait heads of a youth and a young woman, the youth with short wavy hair in the manner of Octavian, the woman with her hair in a chignon in the manner of Livia; mounted in a late Roman gold setting, circa 4th century A.D., with a plain hoop, round in section, its flattened ends joined to the underside of the bezel, the stone collar-set and fringed by clusters of granulation
