The brooch, centering upon a painted portrait minature on ivory, depicting Carlos IV of Spain wearing the sash of the Royal Order of Charles III and the ribbon of the Golden Fleece, within a old mine-cut diamond surround, with an engraved gold reverse, joined to a gold fob chain and scrolling bar pin, mounted in gold and silver

Lot Essay

Based on the honors worn and other contemporary portraits, the sitter has been positively identified as Carlos IV of Spain 1748-1819, King of Spain (1788-1808). Charles IV and his family were frankly portrayed by Goya, one of the Spanish court painters.
