BAUHAUS--Vassily KANDINSKY (1866-1944). Punkt und Linie zu Fläche. Beitrag zur Analyse der malerischen Elemente. [Bauhausbücher 9]. Munich: Hesse und Becker for Verlag Albert Langen, 1926.

4° (230 x 181mm). 25 monochrome plates and one colour photographic plate after Kandinsky, half-tone and line illustrations in the text after Kandinsky and others, printed by Sickert und Reiche. Typography by Herbert Bayer. (Some very light marginal browning.) Original yellow cloth, lettered and decorated in red, printed dustwrapper with design after Kandinsky on upper panel (extremities very lightly rubbed and bumped, dustwrapper a little marked, spine faded, short tears on spine). Provenance: Otto Ralft (pencilled inscription on flyleaf 'Meinem lieben herrn Otto Ralft , herzlicht , Kandinsky , Dessau, Nov. 26').

FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY INSCRIBED BY KANDINSKY. In his preface, Kandinsky describes Punkt und Linie zu Fläche as 'eine organische Fortsetzung meines Buches Über das Geistige in der Kunst [Munich: 1912]'; while the earlier work considers the spiritual aspects of the creative process and analyses abstraction and the role of colour and form in art, the later volume is the result of his artistic development during the intervening years, and is a more purely theoretical treatise on aesthetics, which discusses the use of colour and geometric forms and compositional questions. V.E. Barnett Kandinsky at the Guggenheim (New York: s.a.), p.290.
