Rothenstein first met Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) in 1910, during his only visit to India. It was in the summer of 1912, shortly after Tagore's arrival in England, that he executed his six magnificent portrait drawings of the Indian poet, published in folio by Macmillan in 1915 as Six Portraits of Sir Rabindranath Tagore, with an introduction by Max Beerbohm. 'These drawings, in which a certain formality of treatment is tempered by a deeply affectionate familiarity with the sitter, are enough in themselves to attest the power of William's draughtsmanship,' writes Robert Speaight. 'Freedom, inspiration and control are there in equal and complimentary measure' (William Rothenstein, 1962, p. 253). One of the other five original drawings in now in the Tate Gallery; another in the City of Manchester Art Galleries, Rutherston Collection. Imperfect Encounter: Letters of William Rothenstein and Rabindranath Tagore, edited by Mary M. Lago, appeared in 1976.
