CHURCHILL, Sir W.L.S. Autograph letter signed ('W') to Pamela, Countess of Lytton, Chartwell, 14 August 1951, 2 pages, 8°.
Painting, toil at 'the Book', and memories of better times. Churchill is off to Annecy, where 'all depends on sunshine; for I hope to paint as well as toil at the Book [The Second World War] -- Volume V now going into final print!'. His thoughts stray to Pamela's happiness at Knebworth, 'but the world is grim, & I am glad we had our lives when we did. I sh[oul]d be v[er]y doubtful about beginning all over again'. The letter ends with thoughts of the position of independent India: 'Poor India -- a hard fate lies before her. -- Not y[ou]r fault or mine anyhow!'.
