WITTGENSTEIN, Ludwig. Autograph letter signed ('Ludwig Wittgenstein') to Alice Ambrose, Skjolden i Sogn, Norway, 17 February 1937, on lined paper, 1 1/3 pages, 8°; autograph envelope. Provenance: Alice Ambrose Laserowitz (1906-2001; sale Doyle, 30 April 2002, lot 15).
'I HOPE YOUR WORK IS GOING WELL & I HOPE YOU HAVE FORGIVEN ME FOR INFLICTING PAIN UPON YOU WHILE YOU WERE IN CAMBRIDGE'. Wittgenstein writes from his Norwegian house that he has received Ambrose's Christmas card, but is 'ashamed' not to have sent her a card, excusing himself, 'you are on my list of people to whom I intended to write but somehow you were forgotten [...] so take my best wishes for the New Year although a bit of it has already passed'. He then tells her that he has been living in Norway since August 1936 -- he had moved to his isolated house in order to translate the Brown Book and construct a finished work from the lectures, but had given this up in November and started writing a new version, which would become his Philosophical Investigations -- before sending his good wishes and ending 'I hope you have forgiven me the pain I inflicted upon you while you were in Cambridge [3 words cancelled, amending it to: ... forgiven me for inflicting pain upon you ...]'.
