EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Autograph letter signed ('Albert') to his first wife, Mileva Einstein-Maric, n.p., 17 October 1925, one page, 4°.
PLANS FOR THE SEDUCTION OF HIS ELDEST SON. Einstein is alarmed that son, Hans Albert, is planning to marry Frieda Knecht, and proposes a solution: 'Things are really dangerous with Albert now. For he tells me himself that he has it in mind to marry this Miss Knecht. I know only one answer. He has got to know a good-looking woman here in her 40s, who has made an impression on him. She would soon bring him round, without it getting dangerous for him. Send him here to study for a year. That will cure him. He would naturally live independently and be his own man'. The letter goes on to ask Mileva to send a declaration he needs, 'so that I can look after my people here', sends news from the German legation in Moscow that the results of an enquiry into the fate of Mileva's brother are not to be expected soon, and communicates financial information about an American account.
Einstein's distrust of Hans Albert's intended bride, Frieda Knecht, were founded chiefly on fears of her flawed genetic inheritance. The marriage, when it took place, proved considerably more durable than either of his own.
