HITLER AS 'THE GREAT SPOOK', AND THE ABANDONMENT OF DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS FOR THE LAWS OF SPACE. Einstein is sorry to hear that his son and daughter-in-law have been having hard times, and sends some money; 'Meanwhile a lot has happened in the world, and we can only hope that this time the Germans will get their wings decisively clipped. I would have little faith in this actually happening without the Russians'; once that has blown over, he predicts internal convulsions in America, 'because people will no longer put up with the antiquated political-economic system'. For his own part, he has been working hard, but without success: 'I see where the thing should lead, and I believe that the idea I had then at your place was right. But we are up against completely new mathematical formulations which are too dense for my old brain; so I have little hope of bringing the matter to a convincing end. The most interesting aspect of this is that one has to abandon differential equations as a means of expression for the laws of space'. He sympathises with Hans Albert for having to work outside his own field, but he will be able to return 'when the great spook is gone'. The letter ends with ironical comments on the Swiss approach to asylum.
